What is Lokarona?

Lokarona is a collaborative programs developed between Ruas Bambu Nusa and Colors of Indonesia focused on the exploration and development of sustainable Natural Pigment & Geoart. This program emerges as a response to environmental challenges caused by non-degradable chemical-based synthetic pigments that have become significant contributors to soil and water pollution. Through a participatory approach, Lokarona invites communities to become more familiar with the rich colors from nature, learn extraction techniques, and process them into environmentally friendly pigment materials. By utilizing abundant natural resources, this program encourages the empowerment of local knowledge as a foundation for developing more sustainable pigment alternatives.

In this edition, Lokarona will explore the wealth of natural pigments in the foothills of Mount Merapi, renowned for its diversity of vegetation, minerals, and volcanic rocks. This region offers unique and distinctive potential sources of Natural Pigment, reflecting Indonesia's natural richness that remains largely unexplored. The program will be implemented through a series of workshops and art exhibitions that function not only as educational platforms but also as venues for documentation, research, and preservation of natural colors. Through this comprehensive approach, Lokarona hopes to instill a deeper ecological awareness while enriching the discourse and practice of using natural pigment materials in contemporary society.
